MEN’S HEALTH AWARENESS: HEARING Loss

11th June, 2024

Say What? Men are more likely to experience hearing loss than women.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), men between the ages of 20 and 69 are twice as likely as women to experience hearing loss.

Causes can include loud music (through headphones or live events) and noise exposure from loud working environments, such as construction, manufacturing, or military settings, which increases risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL).

Certain medications may also play a part, with ototoxic medications like aspirin, acetaminophen, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), having been linked to hearing loss in men, particularly those under 60.

As men age, their risk of hearing loss also increases. According to the NIDCD, 25% of men over 65 experience hearing loss, compared to 15% of women.

Interesting Fact! Men tend to experience high-frequency hearing loss, while women tend to experience low-frequency hearing loss.

Prevention and Treatment

1. Wear hearing protection: It’s pretty obvious, but it’s important to protect your ears from loud noise. Use earplugs or defenders when working in loud environments, and with festival season upon us, before hitting those loud live music events! Find out about our certified ear protector Earshade, here.

2. Turn down the volume: Many of us use earphones for listening to music and podcasts, but often the levels we listen at exceed safe levels. Turn down the volume a few notches, and get some ultra clear, distortion minimising earphones. If the sound you hear is crystal clear you won’t feel the need to turn it up so high!

3. Get regular hearing tests: Schedule regular hearing tests to detect hearing loss early and address it with hearing aids or other treatments.

4. Avoid harmful medications: Be aware of the potential risks of ototoxic medications and consult with your doctor if you have concerns.

5. Take quiet breaks: Take regular breaks in quiet environments to give your ears a rest.

6. Stay healthy: Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management, to reduce the risk of hearing loss.

7. Sound Solutions: Whilst hearing protection is essential in loud environments, some people also experience discomfort from everyday regular sounds.
