As a male of the human species, I’m glad to be writing this article and sharing the personal importance it holds for me. I hope this piece helps to promote further awareness in the realms of mens’ mental health and perhaps offer a few pointers to any of us that may be struggling.

First things first, talk, talk, talk, don’t keep it all in!

I’m a musician and psychotherapist so I spend most of my time musicking and exploring the deeply vulnerable thoughts and overwhelming emotional states we can sometimes find ourselves in. It feels like an absolute cliche telling you to ‘TALK’ but I know a lot of us still find it hard even in these ‘more accepting’ times of greater mental health awareness. I know, I get it, talking about emotions can seem weird, but it’s vital! Bottling up and packing away emotions can lead to stress, anxiety, depression and other more sinister stuff. Find someone you trust, whether it’s a friend, family member, or therapist. Sometimes, just having someone listen can make a world of difference when life seems dark.

Secondly, stay connected! We are all primed for social connection yet paradoxically we are becoming lonelier and more disconnected in these fast technological times. Make an effort, get out, connect, cultivate this sense of belonging we all need, reach out to a mate, they might be in the same boat as you! Music, sports, games, whatever is your thing, connect with others through any means! It’s a key component to getting some mental clarity and taking the heat out of the harshness of life when it gets heavy.

Exercise is my third pillar of emotional health. Countless studies have shown the benefits of movement and exercise whether that be running, gym stuff or anything else that gets the blood pumping. Remember that physical activity isn’t just for your body; it’s also a powerful tool for your mind too. I won’t bore you with the science but exercise releases feel good hormones, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. So, find an activity you enjoy, whether it’s lifting weights, kicking a ball or climbing a wall, set yourself a task of checking with how you feel after the event. You might be surprised.

Lastly, keep an eye on the booze (or other hedonistic pursuits). It might feel good at the time but there’s always a ‘pay back’, a come down, a hangover. When the buzz has gone, the dip can be far worse so sometimes it’s worth leaving it alone especially if life is throwing curveballs in your direction. This is especially true in my world of the music industry where it’s almost expected ‘to indulge’; almost part of the territory, hopefully that is starting to change!

So, all in all, connect, reach out, get fit and don’t get wasted. If you are a musician or in the industry then you might find the Tonic Music peer groups helpful as it connects and provides a place to be heard and hear the struggles of others. Above all, it promotes a sense of belonging which is very much dwindling in our modern world.'
